Perfectly Flawed.

Above is a poster I illustrated and designed for a really cool youth event geared towards girls. It encourages healthy self-esteem, body image and lots of great girly stuff.
I decided to go all out on the girl factor and make it as dreamy, fairytailish and pink as I could without making it look corny.

The Quirky Carrot Cafe is a brainchild of one of my local highschool's Foods and Tourism teacher. I was contacted to create a fun-loving logo! I am looking forward to seeing it printed, I'm thinking a handmade looking paper would be really cute. sidenote: I really just love all the clients I've worked for as a freelancer, and no I'm not sucking up.

In May I was apart of a really great creative team responsible for the branding, visual elements and live production of a youth event with about 2500+ kids attending. My fellow Brosociate Matt Morgan, who is a great designer and snow-bro, was the head of the event. He kicked us lazy artists into shape and ran the production room efficiently and effectively. The above video was his being a smart man and letting me have fun with some bumpers we used for the intermission, I was required to create something random and I did exactly that!

Below is a really bad shot I took on my broken iphone of The Almost, who played a really solid show and encouraged the kids in a positive direction... ok so apparently I deleted that photo from my phone because I cannot find it anywhere... what a bummer! Instead here's a picture of my puppy, Wiley

I was at my friends place and she brought out these paper straws that she had found at her grandparents place. I almost died... the packaging was amazing this is true vintage folks. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did!

I worked on a wedding invite for a friend's wedding (final image in the previous post) and I received it in the mail today. She chose this lovely shiny pearly paper to print the final on and as you can see it looks so great!

As most of you know I have s special place in my heart for horses and I occasionally have the urge to paint one of those beautiful creatures. Below is an image of a watercolour of a palomino horse I'm working on.

The above drawing is from an abrupt doodle spasm as I worked on a wedding invite. The following is the base drawing of the flowers requested to be in the invite design, I'll be completing the flowers in watercolour and I am looking forward to using my brushes again.

Ah so the bustle of the holiday season is over, the fever 2011 is upon us all and it seems everyone is pretty optimistic this new year. Maybe it's like this every year and now that I'm out of school I notice that a world exists on the outside. Personally I am hoping for a great year, a fresh year, a different year.

I'd have to say that it has started out pretty fantastic. I'm in the country side enjoying the peacefulness of nature, the purity of the snow (no slush here from ice and cars), the fresh fresh air and the noise pollution of my dog barking at who knows what.

I've been able to go horseback riding twice now in the new year (and there will be much more to come). And if you know me this is one tops my list for favorite things to do.

My good friend Ashley Ross shares my affinity with Will Ferrell, so for her Bday this year (awhile back) I drew her up this sketch of the man Himself as Ron Burgundy.

Yes that's him, Channel 4 news, scotch and all!!

And all that... I was walking through the mall and Club Monaco had the sweetest display. It was the actual fashion illustrations from their New York designer. I loved them and wanted to share the drawings.

And the drawings were not for sale, I went into ask about who did them and that was the first thing they said. The rest of the store was also done up really nice, I love the simplicity of their displays and the over all feel of the store, I didn't take any pictures inside because the sales associates were giving me looks... I guess I didn't suite a faux rabbit fur scarf, who knew? horses?

I like browsing through the Apple site every now and again. I came across this accessory of a clutch/wallet that holds your iphone, I think it is fantastic!! What a smart accessory, although I would prefer something less shiny it's a start

Also some exciting news. A couple of my pieces will be featured in the January issue of an online magazine called Alila, look out for it. I will be posting the link once it's out :)

I'm really excited to share this post. For the past few months I've been working away at illustrating a children's book for a fantastic author, Kim Sabourin. She had decided to write a book about her lovely daughter whom her and her family had adopted. She wanted to share the experience of adoption and how it can be an amazing and positive experience for the child. Her message in the book highlights how despite adoption and racial differences her daughter does not feel any less loved and is the most confident joyful little girl out there.

Alongside an endearing family story, Kim provides further information on adoption and provides parents with resources. She has also started an Adoption Service called Destiny Adoption, which provides prospective and current adoptive parents with counselling, support and assistance.

Recently Featured in a book for the Adoption Council of Ontario, Kim's positive message on adoption has taken off to a running start. It is really exciting to be a part of something like this and I encourage you to check out Destiny Adoption Services where you can find out more about what Kim's doing, purchase the book and download some colour pages by yours truly :)

At the beginning of this year I started a project for this unit Niagara Health Care called fastwebcheckin.
I think it's a genius idea, you can make an appointment for a walk in clinic online! Come on who likes waiting in Clinics, who knows what germs are floating around in there.
My last experience with a clinic was horrible, the receptionist was gabbing on her cell phone to her friend about how she's annoyed with her boyfriend and I waited for about 2 ours. Ok, it was kinda funny to hear the conversation but waiting was just as annoying.

Anyways, the project was a motion graphic for the fastwebcheckin site and I thought I'd share the project again for those of you who missed it. It can be viewed on the fastwebcheckin site, here's the link Fastwebcheckin.com Enjoy!!

So, my phone broke in half recently and I am lucky enough to have some good friends that I got a nice 3G iphone. My first thought was "Yes, now I can take pics and try this blog thing". So this is me once again attempting to blog, I'm not sure why it's such a difficult thing for me to do. There are a couple blogs I love following like Cup of Jo, the Don Miller Blog and well I'd like to add myself to the roster.

My plan is that my blog will consist of good art, good people, inspiring messages and a little look into my life as a whole, which of course included the projects I am working on.

.. I love Fall. I'm currently living in this old house built in 1985, which means we have alot in common me and this house, it reminds me of my parents house so it's somewhat of a comfort to me. There is this old tree outside my window that right now loves telling me how much time there is left till the snow decides to make it's appearance.

But I don't mind.

Created logo for Destiny Adoption Services, located in Ottawa. Here are some concepts from my sketchbook, I like the Ornate 'D' and I really hope I can use it somewhere else one day.

Below is what the final design the client chose, and I'll give you a little run down of the meaning. The heart in the centre of the D represents the adopted child coming under the care of their new family to be protected, accepted, nurtured and loved. I like that I got to work with the letter 'D' because the shape of it makes me think of a road and how the vertical line intersecting with the curves of the D is like two roads (or lives) intersecting, that it is predestined. Much like the vision of the client.

I've recently completed a couple motion graphics for a client. They were really fun to work on and I learnt alot. What I've been learning alot of these days is to keep pushing through even if I feel like nothing is going forward... just to persevere. The joys of being a recent graduate and feeling the pressure of life.

First, I have come across this wonderful photography on C-G unit, Simen Johan I just love his take on wildlife photography.

Second, Mirko Hanak an illustrator from 1967. He was featured on Drawn, so you may have already seen this but if you haven't gone to the link I suggest you do.

So I did a painting as a gift for my friend's wedding present. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a final shot of it, but I took one on my computer (the resolution is crappy but you can make out most of it). I'll eventually get a good photo of it, at least I hope so! Sigh!

Alrighty, so I have just returned from the country (my parents house) and am still convinced it is where I want to live for the rest of my life. Just to clarify it is the country for the rest of my life NOT my parents house (although no rent is tempting lol). My favorite part of being there is falling asleep to the sounds of the crickets and frogs (from the near by creek) and the fresh night air blowing lightly through my open window. Sigh! It makes me want to rewind back to that place... as the sirens scream down the oakville streets.

Now during that week I also made it out to Montreal with my friend Nimit to see Jon Todd and Martin Wittfooth's Show Babylon at the Yves Laroche Gallery. It was excellent! I was also happy to see a horse as one of the subjects for the collabe piece they did. I'll post a picture of it soon!!

So That I actually post something. Here is an illustration of a Amy Winehouse I had done awhile ago. (I liked it and thought it was blog worthy)

A Reflection I did on the 'Human Condition' show

The human condition is something none of us can escape, we are constantly faced with ourselves and the struggle to find out who we are and where we are going. The human condition as described in a book I'm reading is the " struggle outside the physical domain", our minds. They can plague us with questions without answers and lives without purpose. We battle to find our place in this world, to be successful, to make a difference, to be remembered, or there are some of us who struggle to accept who we are because of injustices against us. The reality of this struggle is prevalent in our society as the suicide rate amongst young people is..... Why is this even a problem? Is it the silent struggle of abuse, or the lack of confidence to be loved?

As injustice is described as the abuse of power. It steals the life, liberty and dignity of a person. A struggle of inner turmoil imposed on someone. No choice, which leaves a void, a battle, a condition not easily dealt with. Unfortunately in a society where we have no resources held back, a resolution comes in the form of suicide. Some of us have been hurt by it some of us have had it cross our minds. It is an undeniable problem and a sad reality for many of us, where do we go from here? Is there a solution?

I wonder, why we don't tend to pay attention to these things? Are we that consumed with ourselves that we cannot look outside of us and see a problem? Is our drive to be successful blurring out the people who can no longer help themselves? Is this a choice or a lack of understanding?
I would choose the latter, because the more I understand these issues the harder I find them to ignore. I'm not even sure what I can do to make a difference except to be more aware of what really does go on around me and the personal struggle to remember I am not the center of the world.
As you look at my art I want you to think of injustice, of what people without hope feel like, or maybe you yourself can relate with the images, don't ignore it because there is more.

As human beings existing in a broken world where circumstances work against us through injustices, hurt, confusion and personal voids. I want to examine the effects these realities have on people and the personal struggle of self acceptance and distinctiveness that is face when someone choses to confront the issues of circumstance.

"lost" this was done to represent the permanent effects of war of victims. I painted this woman with the intention of displaying a victim of the Holocaust, she's lived through the nightmare but it continues to haunt her. The tattoo on her left arm is a symbol of the bird on the German coat of arms, which is becoming infected and is overpowering in contrast to her skin. Her lace bodice , has Jewish Symbolism in it but she wears it on the outside whereas her inside is continually dealing with the nazi oppression.

When the viewer looks at her I want them to be drawn in by the haunted look in her eyes and her expressionless face. I want them to think about why she's like that. The connection of the Holocaust may not be obvious, because I want the viewers experience to be subjective.

This is a piece that is in the process... called 'Good and Bad'. The woman's Kimono has a battle scene of animals, the victimized animals are white mirroring her. The battle is representing her own inner battle. Her belt is contrasted with her kimono, representing the inner piece she is striving for. The japanese strive for a state of Zen through nature. The apple blossom trees are in connection with her grasp for inner peace. The apple blossom is also a symbol for life, beauty and how fleeting life is.
